During an address to reporters at the G-20 international summit in China. The president of the United States, Barack Obama stated that he will like to prevent an “arms race” among countries that have various cyber weapons at their disposal. He went on further to say that the world is “moving into a new era where a number of countries have significant capacities”, he said that before making it clear that the United states has “more capacity than anybody, both offensively and defensively” regarding cyber weapons.
Obama made this remarks after President Vladimir Putin of Russia denied being involved with the hack of the Democratic National Committee’s emails which happened earlier this summer.
Earlier on Russian President Vladimir Putin insists that Russia had nothing to do with the hacking of Democratic National Committee (DNC) emails and documents in July, but says it’s a good thing that the information is now public.
In a statement to Bloomberg he said “Listen, does it even matter who hacked this data? The important thing is the content that was given to the public.” Although he said “I DON’T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT IT”, US intelligence officials believe that the attack was carried out by hackers working for the Russian government.
Rather than start a cold war like arms race with cyber weapons, the united states president wants “to start instituting some norms so that everybody acts responsibly. Obama said that “we are going to have enough problems in the cyber space with nonstate actors who are engaging in theft and using the internet for al kinds of illicit practices,” and then went further to say that we “cannot have a situation where this becomes the Wild Wild West, where countries have significant cyber capacity start engaging in unhealthy competition or conflict through these means.”
