Enhanced PS4 is codenamed NEO, here are its specifications

Quite a lot has been added to the enhanced PlayStation 4 rumor, according to Gaming website Giant Bomb, the upgraded PlayStation 4 isn’t just a rumor, as a matter of fact it’s codenamed NEO and includes upgraded specs across the board – CPU, GPU and RAM.

The site also states that multiple sources has confirmed the existence of the upgraded PlayStation 4 and will have an octa-core processor running at 2.1GHz, an improved GPU; AMD GCN with 36 CUs running at 911MHz, and will have a faster memory; 8GB of RAM running at 218GB/s. Here are the specifications of the standard PS 4; CPU – 8 Jaguar Cores at 1.6 GHz, GPU – AMD GCN, 18 CUs at 800 MHz and Memory – 8 GB GDDR5, 176 GB/s.

As you can see the enhanced PlayStation dubbed “Neo” is a huge improvement compared to the standard PS4. Contrary to some other PS4.5 reports, the 4K output of the new version will not be for gaming. Giant Bomb says that it has seen documents that suggest the Neo will upscale games to a 4K resolution within the console itself, but it doesn’t seem to support 4K gaming.

According to the report, gamers shouldn’t expect exclusive features added to the games of the upgraded PS4, that been said, there will be no NEO-only games, and Sony will not let developers separate NEO users from original PS4 players while playing on PSN. Its good that Sony is keeping PS4 and NEO users connected, the company isn’t planning to alienate it’s loyal fans. Games released previous to the NEO can take advantage of this hardware upgrade, that is if developers decide to patch these games. Regarding frame rate, games on NEO can not run below the frame rate of the game on the original PS4. Quite a lot of games will benefit from the increased processing power and enhanced features.

Although the NEO will feature a higher clock speed, an improved GPU and a higher bandwidth on the memory than the original PS4, Giant Bomb states that “it will not supplant the current PS4, but will exist alongside of it and use the same user environment. The PS4 and NEO will use the same PSN store, connect to the same online communities, and offer the same user experience, so expect to see the same cross media bar that you’re used to. Players will be able to retain all of the purchases they made on the PS4.” They also said the HDD on the NEO console will be the same as that in the original PlayStation 4.

No price has been provided for the enhanced PS4, but previous reports indicate that the NEO would sell at $399. E3 is coming soon, lets hope an unveiling of the new hardware will be made.
