It has been reported that hackers had stolen scripts for an unaired episode of the show “Game of Thrones.” The leaked episodes are said to be belonging to Room 104 and Ballers and also, the script of the next week’s Game of Thrones.
“As most of you have probably heard by now, there has been a cyber incident directed at the company which has resulted in some stolen proprietary information, including some of our programming,” HBO Chairman Richard Plepler wrote in a message to employees, which the company shared with reporters.
Additionally, in an email sent to employees, Richard Plepler confirmed the hack. “Any intrusion of this nature is obviously disruptive, unsettling, and disturbing for all of us,” he wrote. “I can assure you that senior leadership and our extraordinary technology team, along with outside experts, are working round the clock to protect our collective interests.”
HBO, declined to comment on reports that unbroadcast episodes and scripts were among the data hacked, citing an “ongoing investigation” by unspecified law enforcement officials.
Entertainment Weekly was the first outlet to report on the hacking. According to the website, an anonymous email was set to many reporters earlier today announcing the hack. The email read:
On Sunday, an anonymous email was sent to many reporters announcing the hack: “Hi to all mankind. The greatest leak of cyber space era is happening. What’s its name? Oh I forget to tell. Its HBO and Game of Thrones……!!!!!! You are lucky to be the first pioneers to witness and download the leak. Enjoy it & spread the words. Whoever spreads well, we will have an interview with him. HBO is falling.”
According to Entertainment Weekly, hackers stole 1.5 terabytes of data and had already posted online unbroadcast episodes of “Ballers” and “Room 104,” along with “a script or treatment” for next week’s episode of “Game of Thrones.”
Back in April, hackers went to Netflix and threatened to release the premiere of “Orange is the New Black” Season 5 early. “Game of Thrones” has also been the subject of a leak in the past. The first four episodes of Season 5 hit online early after screener DVDs were sent to the press and industry insiders.
Game of Thrones is now in its seventh season and due to wrap up next year.
