When it comes to competition, the China smartphone market isn’t a joke. This is because the market is flooded with a wide range of smartphone vendors to pick from, majority of which are locally produced devices. From Xiaomi’s RedMi to Huawei Honor, to Oppo, Vivo etc. so no surprise that the Apple’s iPhone 7 ranked as the second most popular smartphone in China in year 2017 in terms of sales volume, according to a Counterpoint Research report. Although in my opinion, the iPhone was lucky to appear in the top 10.
The China smartphone market isn’t as friendly as other third world markets to foreign products, so its no surprised that a local brand had performed better than Apple’s iPhone 7 Plus.
Claiming the number spot is the Opp R95 device, which accounted for 3% of China’s smartphone market share in 2017. Apple’s iPhone 7 took second place standing at 2.8% market share, making it the only foreign brand to make it to the top ten. The Vivo X9 made it third place raking in 2.7% of the market.
A close at the reason Opp R95 lead over Apple’s iPhone 7 would be mainly due to product pricing. Unlike Apple’s premium pricing on their device, Opp R95 was targeted at the middle-tier market, making their device price ranging between $200 to $450.
The China’s smartphone market is indeed a volatile one, with Huawei attempting to break into US market, Apple, Samsung other foreign brands will have to perform very well to win the 2018 market share in China.
