Levi’s and Google are teaming up to release a touch sensitive jacket next year, this ‘smart’ jacket includes sensors for controlling smartphones with swipes and touch.
The Levi’s denim jacket can control your phone while you are on the move, it uses conductive yarn woven into the garment’s fabric to create a patch you can control just with a touch or swipe. The jacket also features a detachable smart tag on its cuff, this connects the embedded sensor to your phone. Crazy idea right? ya, that’s technology, turning crazy but productive ideas into reality!
These fledgling ideas become prototypes, and prototypes become products.
This jacket was developed with the help of Google’s Advanced Technologies and Products (ATAP) division, for a while now the company has been working on ways to integrate sensors into textiles.
Today at Google’s I/O developers conference, a representative of the ATAP team controlled music playback by swiping down on the jacket’s sleeve. By swiping or tapping the jacket you can silence calls, summon up directions, and get an estimated time of arrival. These features and controls can be achieved using its companion app on your phone.
A jacket as this makes you wonder if it can be washed or if there’s a special method one could use to clean it, nope, Levi’s wants you to treat this jacket like every other clothing, but before washing it you will have to remove its smart tag.
This is technology you can wash, we don’t have to treat a Jacquard jacket differently from any other jacket
Ivan Poupyrev, the head of Projects Jacquard, says the Levi’s jacket is just the start for Project Jacquard. Levi’s made the jacket using the same processes that it had used before while making its non-techy jackets to weave the Jacquard sensors it.
Although it can be connected over Bluetooth, has some chips fitted in the button loop on the sleeve, and also wires which are not really visible, it is still durable enough to handle regular use. There’s no word on how much the jacket will cost, but It comes out Spring 2017, with a beta test this fall.
