Microsoft now allows Xbox gamers to play against PS4 and PC players

Cross-Network Play

What if i told you, that now you could compete against other consoles in gameplay? don’t look at the date, this isn’t April 1st!. Microsoft really is announcing a new feature for Xbox owners today: “Cross-Network Play”. A feature, that will enable PS4, Xbox One, and PC players to play the same game together. Although consoles and PCs have had cross-play feature, console-to-console cross-play hasn’t really kicked off, this is about to change thanks to Xbox Live’s new cross-play functionality.

“First, in addition to natively supporting cross-platform play between Xbox One and Windows 10 games that use Xbox Live, we’re enabling developers to support cross-network play as well,” said Chris Charla. “This means players on Xbox One and Windows 10 using Xbox Live will be able to play with players on different online multiplayer networks — including other console and PC networks.” This post also made it clear that the Cross-Network Play, isn’t only centered on Microsoft’s systems but to other consoles as well.

The first game to support this new feature is Rocket League, and Microsoft stressed that there is an “open invitation for other networks to participate as well,” we all know that information was indirectly pointing out to Sony and other console manufacturers to enable gamers play with others irrespective of the consoles they are using. Sony hasn’t responded to this yet, but i bet the response would be positive, especially when this would be another opportunity to boost up the PlayStation brand. Psyonix VP also expressed joy on this new development;

“To say that the team here at Psyonix is both honored and excited to have Rocket League as the first cross-network game is a massive understatement,” said Psyonix’s Jeremy Dunham on Californian studio’s official website.

“Cross-network play has been the number-one most requested feature our community has asked for since Rocket League was first announced on Xbox One, and now that we are able to pursue complete online unity on all platforms, today’s announcement is a dream come true.”

If other developers work towards this it will add more to the way games are played in the future. For now PlayStation console users are restricted to playing titles on the PlayStation Network, while XBox, Xbox Live, the new Cross-network play will remove this huge restriction in console gaming by allowing online multiplayer gaming across different platforms.

Will this turn out to be reality? i hope it does
