Nokia 2, HMD Global’s most affordable smartphone will be getting the Android 8.1 Oreo soon.
This disclosure came from Juho Sarvikas, Chief Product Officer, HMD Global in a tweet .
You would recall that the Nokia 2 was launched just two months ago, precisely in October 2017, was sold for $99. It came with Android 7.1 Nougat. Juho also said that the 1GB RAM device will be supported on 8.1 release where many of the Android Go memory management improvements will be integrated, which he noted that, “Nokia 2 performance will only get better over time”.

You will recall that HMD Global had from November 2017 announced plans to roll out the Android 8.1 to its other devices, the Nokia 8, Nokia 6 and Nokia 5 devices. Although the Nokia 2 was originally planned to be updated to Android 8.0, the decision to switch to 8.1 would probably have been to take advantage of an improved memory management of the device’s 1GB RAM.

After the sale of its mobile phone business, Nokia began to focus more extensively on its telecommunications infrastructure business, its foray in virtual reality, and the acquisitions of French telecommunications company Alcatel-Lucent in 2016, whilst the Nokia name will return to the mobile phone market through HMD Global.
HMD Global Oy (HMD), is a Finnish company affiliated with Nokia. The company has been operating since December 2016 and currently develops and markets smartphones and feature phones under the “Nokia” brand name. The company has exclusive rights to the brand for mobile phones through a licensing agreement. It was created by inheriting Microsoft Mobile’s feature phone business, which was sold by Nokia in 2014. HMD is headquartered in Espoo, opposite Nokia’s head office, and the company is largely staffed by former Nokia executives.
The Nokia 2 is a Nokia-branded budget Android Smartphone launched on 31st October, 2017 and developed by HMD Global. The device features a 4100 mAh battery claiming a two-day battery life, and was built on Qualcomm Snapdragron 212 Quad Core CPU. It came with 8MP and 5MP rear and front cameras respectively and with a 1GB and 8GB RAM and Storage respectively.
Android 8.0 Oreo is the latest Google-owned Android operating system for mobile devices due to begin shipment in 2018. Some of the key features in the Android Oreo (Go edition) configuration include: Memory optimizations.
