GameStop CEO Paul Raines have given us more details as to when to expect Sony’s PlayStation VR.
We are right now preparing for the launches of the major VR products. We’re in discussions with Oculus, HTC, and Sony. It’s a big launch, we’re getting ready for it. We will launch the Sony product this fall and we are in discussions with the other two players
PlayStation VR is an upcoming virtual reality head-mounted display produced by Sony Computer Entertainment. It is designed to be fully functional with the PlayStation 4 video game system. Though Sony previously scheduled its launch for the first half of 2016, but the PlayStation VR may not launch within the first half of 2016 anymore, rather it will this fall according to the comment made by Paul Raines.
Based on its prototype revealed at GDC’15, it featured an OLED 1920×1080 pixel display with an RGB subpixel matrix, and can display content at 120fps. It also features a FOV of 100°, 6DOF head-tracking, stereoscopic 3D, and unwarped output to a TV, either for others to view what the headset wearer sees, or a separate display to compete against the headset user using a standard PS4 controller.
Sony is expected to give out more information on the release date and several other details during E3 (The Electronic Entertainment Expo is an annual trade fair for the video game industry presented by the Entertainment Software Association), I guess we will have to wait until then.
