Sony Computer Entertainment Inc (SCE) and Sony Network Entertainment International LLC (SNEI) has announced the formation of a new company, Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) that will oversee the affairs of its top rated product – the PlayStation. It said that the new company will join the forces of PlayStation® Business Units to deliver unprecedented experiences to users worldwide, beginning Friday, April 1st 2016.
This announcement was communicated via its Website and Blog. In the blog post, Shawn Layden, President and CEO of SCEA said that the new company, Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) will serve as the headquarters for everything PlayStation, stating that “the formation of SIE will create an even stronger PlayStation. That means an even bigger emphasis on developing pioneering platforms like PS4 and PlayStation VR, world-class games from our World Wide Studios development teams, and innovative network services such as PlayStation Vue. It also means a renewed committment to making PlayStation the best place to play”. I am sure the sound of this would be a welcome idea for the vast PlayStation lovers worldwide.
Sony Computer Entertainment has been known to be a global leader in delivering of cutting edge services in computer entertainment through its various brands, the PlayStation 4 system, PlayStation 3 system and PlayStation Vita (PS Vita) portable system. It has since its inception of PlayStation in 1994, revolutionized the gaming industry with its legacy devices – the PlayStation, PlayStation 2 and PlayStation Portable (PSP). Its other products/services are the PlayStation Network, which provide unparalleled online gaming experience to users through the PlayStation Store and the PlayStation Now, which is a cloud-based gaming service, allowing users to a wide range of games on numerous internet-connected devices.
Is this formation just another paper work? What will be the impact on PlayStation users’ experience? The company said that the purpose of the formation of SIE is to combine its “resources across their hardware, software, content and fast-growing network businesses”, which they believe will better position the company for “enhanced competitiveness, continued expansion and market leadership in all areas”. It also said that SIE will better respond to the needs of consumers and the evolving digital market to deliver unparalleled interactive entertainment experiences under the PlayStation brand. Am sure PlayStation users will be delighted to hear this, as it sounds like something good is in the making.
As per corporate strategy and financial target, the company said that Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) would focus on how to “retain and expand PlayStation user engagement, increase Average Revenue Per Paying Users (ARPPU) and drive ancillary revenue”. SIE will also vigorously expand the PlayStation business by delivering an integrated experience built around best-in-class games and network services to consumers worldwide.
