Turning mosquitoes to male may help fight Zika

Since Zika virus is caused by female mosquitoes, why not turn all mosquitoes to male? Crazy right? but if thats what it takes to eradicate the Zika virus then? who wouldn’t agree to that? besides… of what use are female mosquitoes?

The fact remains that mosquitoes are the deadliest insect in the world, you can also call them the most deadliest ‘animals’. This insects in 2015 alone claimed around 500,000 lives! A very disturbing figure such that entomologist Zach Adelman of Texas A&M University said “I think it is our moral duty to eliminate this mosquito”. Specifically the mosquito specie “Aedes aegypti”, which is responsible for carrying and spreading at least four deadly viruses.

Aedes aegypti is literally probably the most dangerous animal in the world

I think this idea, as seen on Digital Trends is actually a good one, eliminating this threat requires “a new gene-editing technology — one that programs the insects to develop as males. When this happens the predominantly male population would run out of females with whom to mate, thereby causing the whole species to go extinct.”

The Zika virus has attracted much media spotlight in recent months, now the fight against this virus and other mosquito-borne illnesses turns to genetic engineering.

Zika Virus is a member of the virus family Flaviviridae and the genus Flavivirus, transmitted by daytime-active Aedes mosquitoes, such as A. aegypti and A. albopictus. Its name comes from the Zika Forest of Uganda, where the virus was first isolated in 1947. It is related to dengue, yellow fever, Japanese encephalitis, and West Nile viruses. As of February 2016, there’s evidence that Zika fever in pregnant women is associated with intrauterine growth restriction including abnormal brain development in their fetuses through mother-to-child transmission of the virus, which may result in miscarriage or microcephaly.
