Uber is not ignorant of the fact that it can be very stressful sometimes for passengers to find their drivers, so, it rolled out some new features today inorder to make the process a lot less hectic. The update allows passengers to share their exact location with a driver and also a way for people to call an Uber for someone else.
One of the challenging and exciting things we have working at Uber is the intersection of the digital and real world. Trying to find real riders in the real world– that can be challenging and stressful. We want to make the pickup experience more stressfree.
One of the newly added features is “live location sharing.” This allows passengers to share their exact location with their drivers in relation to the pickup spot. All the passanger needs to do is tap “live location” on the app and the driver sees the actual spot they are and navigate closer so they can easily rendezvous. This is particularly helpful in crowded places like airports or even malls where passengers would have had to walk to be in a less busy environment.
The “beacon” is another feature included in update. This is very helpful especially at night, it is a lit-up device that the drivers can display on their windows to aid passengers easily identify their drivers. This feature is just coming to New York, San Francisco and Chicago, it is already available in places like Miami, Nashville and Denver. Uber operates in more than 70 countries and it’ll eventually to roll out this features to them as well.
You might wonder, what if there are many Uber drivers in a particular area for instance the mall, at the same time, and they all have their beacon on? Not to worry, “the driver can choose the color, that’s the color that the beacon will light up as” said Janakiram. So once you know your drivers color, you know your ride.
Now the last feature in the update is called “request for a guest.” Have you ever helped a friend order an Uber? It could be a bit stressful because you’d be the “middle man” communicating with both the driver and your friend since the app only recognizes one passenger.
With this feature a person can hail a ride for someone else, this is done by choosing someone from one’s contact list to designate as the rider. Then a text with trip details, name of driver, car type and estimated time of arrival is sent from the app to that guest passenger.
In the next few weeks, these features should reach everyone in the United States, afterwhich it’ll be rolled out across the other countries in which Uber is available.
