WordPress has acquired the rights to .blog and will start selling domains this year

Automattic, the company behind the world’s most popular publishing platform, WordPress, has secured the rights to manage the sale and registration of .blog domains. Although .blog domain extensions will be available to all websites starting this year as announced on WordPress’ official blog, the company didn’t say exactly when they would arrive or how much the new top-level domains will cost.

Now we’re excited to announce a brand new way to create a unique identity for your website: .blog, a top-level domain extension that will let you create a customized name and web address for your site.

Automattic also plans to offer the domain to WordPress.com users, but not exclusively “the .blog domain will be available to everyone, regardless of what kind of site you have or who hosts it.”

So why .blog? “For years, .com was the dominant choice for website names, but it’s become increasingly difficult to find a name. With a top-level domain like .blog, you can get a name that truly matches your identity. Plus, you’ll get all the same benefits with Google search results.”

WordPress is a free and open-source content management system (CMS) based on PHP and MySQL. WordPress is installed on a web server, which either is part of an Internet hosting service or is a network host itself; the first case may be on a service like WordPress.com, for example, and the second case is a computer running the software package WordPress.org. An example of the second case is a local computer configured to act as its own web server hosting WordPress for single-user testing or learning purposes. Features include a plugin architecture and a template system. WordPress is the most popular blogging system in use on the Web, at more than 60 million websites. It was released on May 27, 2003, by its founders, Matt Mullenweg and Mike Little, as a fork of b2/cafelog.

Automattic, Inc. is a web development corporation founded in August 2005. It is most notable for WordPress.com (a free blogging service), as well as its contributions to WordPress (open source blogging software). The company’s name plays on its founder’s first name, Matt.
