Xbox summer update 2016: Here are all the new features coming to Xbox One

Few months ago, Microsoft released what was perhaps the biggest update to any of its consoles yet, switching the Xbox One user experience to one based on Windows 10 was indeed an impressive turn around. Although new features have arrived since then, Microsoft saved the best yet, for now, the ‘Xbox One summer update’. This update offers a lot of key changes and improvements that make it one of the biggest software releases for the console.

Announced via Xbox Wire, this update will bring features such as Cortana, game improvements and apps list, enhancements to sharing clips, screenshots and much more.

Last November, we transformed Xbox One to make it faster and more social with the New Xbox One Experience, and since then we’ve been delivering regular fan-requested features and updates. Expected this week, we’re releasing into Preview a summer update that will start to rollout to our Xbox Preview audience for Xbox One, and in the coming weeks, we’ll release it to the Xbox app (beta) on Windows 10. New features will roll out to the preview audience in waves, not all at once. We’re really excited about this update as it lays the foundation to bring together more people and more games across devices through Xbox Live.

Starting this summer, Xbox One and the Xbox app will receive the first of two updates that will help you stay connected with friends on Xbox Live and enjoy even more games across your favorite devices. Cortana will come to Xbox One; the Xbox and Windows Stores will start to become unified; we will begin to introduce your top PC games with Game Hubs to Xbox Live, and more. These updates are crucial to giving our fans around the world a great gaming experience wherever and whatever they play.

Cool features right? here’s the breakdown;

Cortana comes to Xbox One: After the Xbox One was switched to Windows 10 it was touted that Cortana (voice assistant used on PC and Windows Phone) will also be available to the console. Now she’s finally arrived.

Although voice commands had been enabled on console, with Cortana there will be significant changes. Now, you’ll have to say “Hey Cortana” before commands rather than “Xbox”, for example, to turn off the console you could say, “Hey Cortana, turn off my Xbox One.” You can also ask her other questions not related to gaming such as questions about the weather. Cortana will also be available through headsets.

Facebook Friend Finder is now part of the Xbox One system; Now you can easily find and add Xbox One owners among your Facebook friends. As more people link their Xbox Live and Facebook accounts, you’ll get new recommendations of people to add.

My Games & Apps now have a new interface: My Games & Apps tile are now moved to the top right of the home screen, this makes it much easier to access. Games are now listed under alphabetical sub-heads and can also be sorted now by last used or size, rather than just alphabetically. When games are downloading, you can now see the speed of the download as well as what is left before it is completed. Additionally the list of games that are to be installed now appears on the lift sidebar, with the games, apps and installation queue.

Windows 10 Xbox app improvements, added with game DVR recording changes: Now videos recorded von Xbox One or PC can now be edited on a PC before it is being posted to the community. Note, this can also be done with third-party Windows editing software.

Others includes:

  • Improved Xbox Store
  • Other PC games will now appear in Xbox Live feed with full metadata and details.
  • Also, PC games played can be seen across all devices, including the Xbox One.

The summer update is now rolling out to those on the Xbox Preview program. It will head out to members in waves via Xbox Live message, so you might not get it quite yet, but it will appear in the next few weeks. The Xbox app for Windows 10 will also be updated. Xbox One owners not on the Preview program will get the update in a month or so.

If you have received an invite, head to your apps, then select Xbox Preview Dashboard, go to Registration, and enroll yourself under “Preview – Latest Xbox One Experience.”
