Apps With Lock Screen Ads Banned From Play Store

In order to generate revenue, app developers rely on advertising, this isn’t a bad idea because it enables them to provide better and sometimes, reliable services.But then, some of these ads are intrusive and upsets the vast majority of users. Some apps even displays some adverts on lock screens of Android devices, this is quite upsetting, I was a victim sometime, the advert prevented me from unlocking my phone, whenever i tried to unlock my smartphone, i ended up clicking the ad instead, guess what? i traced the app and uninstalled it immediately, there’s no use for the app if it inconveniences me.

Google has finally decided ban such apps from the Play Store. If you ask me, I’ll say “about time! this is a good move” These ads can be intrusive and aren’t really conducive to a good user experience. Popular apps like ES File Explorer and Hotspot Shield VPN have relied on lock screen ads to generate revenue.

Google addressed this issue because many called on them to do so. The company has updated its developer monetization page to clearly highlight that unless the exclusive purpose of an app is that of a lockscreen,

Apps may not introduce ads of features that monetize the locked display of a device

In essence, such apps can no longer combine their major functions with that of a lock screen app that serves ads. It is important to note, that developers still have the ability to create lock screen apps and they may serve ads as well, but;

Unless the exclusive purpose of the app is that of a lockscreen, apps may not introduce ads or features that monetize the locked display of a device.

An app that bills itself as a photo editor, VPN, or file explorer cannot put an add on your lockscreen. But, an app that is actually a lock screen can still monetize with ads.
