The last has certainly not been heard about Cambridge Analytica. In Nigerian, former President Goodluck Jonathan has through his spokesman, denied knowledge of his party, the PDP enlisting the services of Cambridge Analytica during the 2015 general elections.
A statement from the spokesman of the former Nigerian president says, Jonathan “wasn’t aware” of any use of Cambridge Analytica by his party in the country’s elections, was in response to an ongoing investigation by the Nigerian government on a claim that Cambridge Analytica, on behalf of the then ruling party PDP, may have illegally used Facebook data in the 2015 general election.
The issue of Cambridge Analytica’s alleged data mining of Facebook data is currently a global scandal, cutting through countries like New Zealand, the USA, UK, Kenya and now Nigerian. In the USA, the firm is accused of mining data and linked to President Donald Trump campaign organization. It was initially reported that the firm mined 50million users’ data but Mark Zuckerberg this week, announced a staggering 87million users as the currently affected users.
In Nigeria, while some are viewing the situation as manipulative use of political power, the Nigerian government has said its probing whether the firm broke the law to perpetuate discord and hack the then opposition candidate’s records.
The APC led government is accusing the PDP of perpetuating discord, through hacking into personal records of the then opposition candidate, Muhammadu Buhari. It says the PDP may have incited mass anti election rallies, and purported its behind a gory video then which depicted Buhari as an Islamic fundamentalist on a quest to enforce Sharia law in Nigeria. However, the former President Jonathan’s spokesman, Ikechukwu Eze, in response has said he (President Jonathan) was not aware the PDP used Cambridge Analytica.
So the question is, did the PDP ever enlisted the services of Cambridge Analytica? If they did, was Goodluck Jonathan aware? The coming weeks will reveal more lights to the political battle, which many knows is in view of the upcoming general election in 2019.
